Update and Call: PIRATES PUT IRAQ PLUNDER ON TRIAL
Press Release,

WEDNESDAY 14 SEPTEMBER, 9.30AM, THAMES MAGISTRATES' COURT, BOW ROAD E3

Two activists who occupied the offices of Windrush communications – the organizer of a string of Iraq-related business conferences – will challenge the legality of privatization measures imposed on Iraq by the US and UK
at their trial next Wednesday. A motley collection of pirates, carrying a banner saying ‘STOP THE CORPORATE PLUNDER OF IRAQ’ will be outside the court from 9.30am to help draw attention to the case.

Steven Barnes (30) and Ewa Jasiewicz (27) – who were arrested for
‘Aggravated Trespass’ – during an occupation of Windrush’s offices last December – will argue that they were attempting to prevent a crime, namely the illegal sell-off of Iraqi assets. This case represents the first ever legal challenge to the economic reforms imposed on Iraq.

Notes From Inside New Orleans
Jordan Flaherty,

I just left New Orleans a couple hours ago. I traveled from the apartment I was staying in by boat to a helicopter to a refugee camp. If anyone wants to examine the attitude of federal and state officials towards the victims of hurricane Katrina, I advise you to visit one of the refugee camps.

The Block slashed their incomes
Ammar abdulsatter,

The Block slashed their incomes

It was a rather unfortunate day when we chose this particular area to establish our small businesses as shop keepers in our capital city Baghdad. We never predicted that there will come a time when our neighborhood will be inflicted upon by the presence of a dangerous entity that will someday suffocate our lives and affect whatever left of our minimal incomes in this drastic way.

Our small cluster of shops is located very close to the Italian embassy in Baghdad. A few months ago due to the increasing security concern all over Iraq, the embassy without consent placed large concrete blocks all around it completely blocking the way to our shops as well. Displaying a little concern for the poor shop keepers a path of one meter was left between the shops and the blocks to allow people to visit these shops. This big gesture of generosity soon turned into irritated customers, who seized to come to our shops due to the two security guards the embassy ordered to stand at the entrance of this one meter path and check all our customers walking in to buy our offerings. This blockage has declined our customer base to less than half and our already war stricken lives are on a continuous decline. With this huge decrease in our income not only us but our families are suffering as well.

Given our poor situation we would like to raise a question according to the principles of human rights, especially the right of work: Who gave the Italian embassy the right to cut our incomes and the incomes of our employees???

We met the security officer at the Embassy, but he did not have any solution to this problem! The matter did not seem to affect him at all!! We tried to submit a case in front of the Iraqi Authorities in court. But the inaccessibility to authorities prevented us.

To our Italian Friends… we would like to say "you know very well that any diplomat or a diplomatic mission is a guest in the host country where it serves. The diplomats should at least show some respect to the people of their host country.

In the end we don't want only our rights but we demand a compensation for the period the blocks were inflicted upon us in addition to the removal of the blocks.
