Winning Hearts and Minds
Dahr Jamail,

Last night an older Iraqi man in his shop on Karrada Street told me, "The
situation here is worse than I can ever remember. How the Americans handle
things in Falluja and down South over the next few days will determine
everything. I still can't understand their policy here. Where is the freedom
they promised?"

This morning while I was on the roof of the apartment talking with a radio
station in Connecticut, a huge explosion went off in the Coalition
Provisional Authority (CPA) area just across the Tigris from me. Not long
after that, another went off at the Sheraton Hotel, then another in the
other direction caused by a rocket flying just overhead. All of this was
followed by sporadic gunfire to the north. Life in liberated Baghdad today.

A Letter from an Iraqi Mother to the Mothers of the Americans Kil
Samira,

.... I know how painful it is for a woman to lose someone dear. I can feel your pain.
.... For we, Iraqi women, have lost too much, and have suffered what no mother on the face of the earth has.

April 10 2004, A War Without End
Andrea Schmidt,

Iraq is a country at war.

Exactly a year after we were told that the war had ended and that freedom
had been brought to the people of Iraq, the square in which Saddam’s
statue was toppled was put under curfew again. The curfew didn't prevent
a mortar attack on the Alwiyah Club that stands beside the square hidden
behind blast walls.

The Invisible Fire
Ewa Jasiewicz,

This article was written initially for Occupation Watch but due to political and editorial differences has since been reclaimed by the author and is being published in its original form. Original editing was done by Labour Historian Marge Linsky, much of which has been kept.

The author spent 3 months in British-Occupied Basra between November 2003 and January 2004 investigating the conditions of Public Sector workers in Iraq’s biggest oil companies - The Basra Oil Company and The Southern Oil Company - plus those of workers in the region's electricity sector and the country’s key port, Umm Qsr. OW studied the level of organization, attitudes towards unions, and the actions of existing unions in the region.

April 11th, Eyewitness Report from Falluja
Jo Wilding,

Well George, I know too now. I know what it looks like
when you brutalise people so much that they’ve nothing
left to lose. I know what it looks like when an
operation is being done without anaesthetic because
the hospitals are destroyed or under sniper fire and
the city’s under siege and aid isn’t getting in
properly. I know what it sounds like too. I know what
it looks like when tracer bullets are passing your
head, even though you’re in an ambulance. I know what
it looks like when a man’s chest is no longer inside
him and what it smells like and I know what it looks
like when his wife and children pour out of his house.

It’s a crime and it’s a disgrace to us all.

Logic, Mythology and the Iraq War
Gary Sudborough,

A logical explanation of why George W. Bush's rationalizations for the Iraq war are asinine and the discussions about Iraq on US corporate television among pundits and so-called experts are based on false assumptions and are ridiculous as well.
