The speeches said it all, Israel is occuping Lebanon and HAS been occupying Gaza for FAR too long. THe anti-US government sentiment was shared by Muslim, Christian, Jew and Rebel alike. It was shocking to me to see and HEAR so many voices coming together. When they had the rally a couple of weeks ago, things were relatively quiet, but not today. Voices were raised and they were raised with anger. I was a bit worried about my sign decrying the US and Israel as the new 3rd Reich, but those worries were soon aliviated when I saw the COUNTLESS signs comparing both countries to Nazi Germany. Nobody can deny the comparison.
There were only 3 counter protesters that I saw, one of whom seemed to be just passing through. He commented to a Muslim lady that he had fought for her freedom, to which she responded "You didn't fight for anything for me" He sson disappeared but was replaced by Dumb Ass and his girlfriend. While standing to the left side of the stage I heard his assanign coments that he kept making to a Muslim gentleman. I could tell by his unintelligent and beligerant comments that he was simply trying to get a physical reaction out of people, so in my way to defuse the situation, I calmly turned and took their picture. He asked why I had done so and I simply responded "I want to show my daughter what a Nazi looks like." He soon left as well.
Overall this was a physically peaceful rally, but the words were not so. I was PROUD to stand next to the Muslim community of Portland in their anger. We MUST fight the imperialist occupiers. They are attempting to wipe out an entire group of people by calling them terrorsts then saying the children were simply "casualties".
This MUST stop NOW. End the Occupation! Free Lebanon!! Free Palestine!!!
