Amidst escalating repression and political crisis, the Akbayan Citizens Action Party recently held its Third Regular Congress last October 14 and 15, 2006, at the Riverbend Hotel in Marikina City. With the theme "Ipaglaban ang Dangal ng Pilipino, Ipaglaban ang Kinabukasan Ngayon" (Claim the Future Now), Akbayan marked its more than eight years existence as an alternative national political party in the Philippines.

LABAN NG MASA (Struggle of the Masses),
Yesterday, former University of the Philippines president and Laban ng Masa (Struggle of the Masses) Chairperson, Dr. Francisco "Dodong" Nemenzo, Jr and ten others were charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly harboring fugitive rebel soldiers belonging to the Magdalo group which the government believed to be involved in the July 2003 failed coup.

On Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at 5 pm a demonstration took place to protest the latest Israeli atrocities committed in Qana, Lebanon which killed more than 60 civilians including 37 children as they slept in a bomb shelter. Hundreds of protestors met at the San Francisco Federal Building for a rally and then marched through the Tenderloin, down Market Street to Powell Street for another spriited rally. The demonstration was called by the American Arab Anti Discrimination Committee - San Francisco.
