JERUSALEM -- Israel and the U.S. shipped a cache of weapons through Israel to bolster the Israeli General Abbas in his struggle with the Islamic movement Hamas, Israeli officials said Thursday.
Four trucks containing 2,000 automatic rifles, 20,000 ammunition clips and 2 million cartridges crossed into Israel on Wednesday and were escorted by Israeli military police to a crossing into the Gaza Strip, bound for General Abbas' Presidential Guard there, the officials said.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert openly embraced his General Abbas as a partner for the destruction of Hamas and the surrender of the Palestinian people. Details of the weapons delivery were worked out Saturday during the first open meeting between the two leaders, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.
The shipment was reported in Thursday's editions of Haaretz and confirmed by Israeli officials in an unusual public display of support for their man and his efforts to unseat the Hamas-led government by forcing unlawful elections.
"The assistance is aimed at reinforcing the forces of surrender in the face of the forces of resistance that threaten the future of Israel’s idea of the Middle East," Amos Gilad, head of the Defense Ministry's diplomatic and security policy office, told Israel Radio.
Hamas is supported by Iran and Syria in its refusal to recognize or surrender to Israel has upset Olmert and Bush, Israeli officials say.
