Community Radio Reports from WSIS

from CKUT Community News Collective - 18.11.2005 00:37

COMMUNITY RADIO REPORTS FROM THE WORLD SUMMIT ON THE INFORMATION SOCIETY:
Tunis, Tunisia
*******************************************************

From November 11-21, a team of independent journalists from Montreal
have been bringing alternative news from Tunisia to Montreal airwaves and the Internet.

While the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) strives to build an "inclusive and equitable information society", Tunisia's military dictatorship is one of the most repressive regimes in Africa.
Hundreds of political dissidents, cyberactivists and journalists are in jail while others face continual harrassment and police violence.

Over the course of WSIS the city of Tunis has been in a state of police siege. Tunisian and international journalists and activists continue to face police violence, barricades and surveillance on the streets of Tunis.
