On June 21st, 2005 former leader of the Lebanese Community Party, George Hawi was assassinated in a car bomb in the Kola district of Beirut. Hawi, who is widely known as a living symbol of leftist political movements historically in Lebanon, lost his life just two days after Lebanon’s parliamentary elections came to an end. Hawi’s death is the latest in a recent string of political assassinations in Lebanon, that began with the assassination of Rafik Hariri in February, which some in Lebanon have blamed on the Syrian government. Hariri’s death sparked a series of popular demonstrations throughout Lebanon, which eventually saw the withdrawal of upwards of 15 000 Syrian troops from Lebanon. There is dispute within Lebanon & internationally as to the remaining presence of major Syrian intelligence apparatus in the country, which some blame for the recent assassinations. Also on June 2nd well-known leftist journalist and half-Palestinian Samir Kassir was also assassinated in the bomb-blast in Beirut. On the scene of the bombing many Lebanese leftists gathered, shocked by the bombing and expressing that both Hawi’s assassination is a clear indication that well-known leftist political figures in Lebanon are under-attack. It remains unclear who targeted George Hawi today in Lebanon, however the ongoing\ political instability within Lebanon in recent months and stretching back to the civil war continues. Hidden Truth If we are to talk about cleanup, let's look back into history. Let's look back to those "alleged" Lebanese revolutionaries. If you want a cleanup and if you want revolution then change the constitution and allow the majority to rule. It disgusts me to read that there are some who think that Hawi is a terrorist. Where was the world when those “Alleged Lebanese” were committing massacres against the innocents?
