البارحة مساء الجمعة 17 تشرين أول 2003، تجمع ناشطون في حملة مقاطعة داعمي إسرائيل بمشاركة ناشطتين من بريطانيا وإيرلندا من تحالف "أوقفوا الحرب" أمام بوابة الجامعة الاميركية في بيروت قبل ساعة من موعد حفلة زياد سحاب وفرقة شحادين يا بلدنا المدعومة من نسكافيه-نستله. قام الناشطون بتوزيع منشور يوضح بالمعلومات والمصادر كيف تدعم الشركة السويسرية إسرائيل. وزع الناشطون أيضاً بيان موقع بإسم إحدى الناشطات (نفس الرسالة المنشورة على بيروت انديميديا). وقاموا بتوزيع العدد الأخير من مجلة "قاطعوا" التي تصدر عن ناشطي حملات المقاطعة في الدول العربية والتي تحتوي معلومات عن انتهاكات نستله وغيرها من الشركات كما تحوي أخباراً عن نشاطات المقاطعة حول العالم.

Protest Against a Nestle' Sponsored Concert

Last Friday evening, the 17th October 2003, activists from the campaign to "Boycott supporters of Israel" gathered an Irish activist and a British activist from "Stop the War Coalition" in front of the AUB main gate one hour before Ziad Sahhab's Nestle sponsored concert where they distributed leaflets on how Nestle supports Israel. These leaflets included information about Nestle's violation of human rights with tens of links of information sources.

وقد تجاوب أغلبية الطلاب الخارجين والداخلين من وإلى الجامعة معنا بمن فيهم أحمد الخطيب العازف في فرقة شحادين يا بلدنا بينما رفض زياد سحاب أن يأخذ مجلة قاطعوا أو بروشور عن نستله. كما أن العديد من الطلاب قد توقف ليستفسر أو يناقش في مواضيع تتعلق بالمقاطعة ودعم إسرائيل.

وبينما حضر السيد زياد مبيض، الوسيط بين الشركة السويسرية الداعمة لإسرائيل نستله وبين خالد الهبر وشحادين يا بلدنا ليهدد بـ"عمل مشكل" إذا استمر توزيع البيانات! وقد أخبر الناشطين بأنه عمل مشكل مع إتحاد الشباب الديمقراطي في الجامعة لانهم كانوا يوزعون بياناً ضد الحفل ونستله. وهنا أجابه طالب ثانوي (ناشط في إندي ميديا بيروت) قائلاً: لا يحق لك أن تعترض على تحرك الناشطين فهم يمارسون حق تكفله لهم شرعة حقوق الإنسان.

كل ذلك تم بينما مسؤول صفحة شباب السفير كان يسجل ملاحظاته ويسال إن كان البيان الموزع هو بإسم الحملة وقد تم توضيح أن البيان يوزع بشكل فردي وبإسم كاتبته الناشطة في الحملة وليس بإسم الحملة.

وعلى الجهة الاخرى كان نقاش هادىء ياخذ مجراه ما لبث ان تحول إلى تساؤل بصوت عال عما إن كن سيقاطعن الحفل او سيحضرنه ويرفضن شرب النسكافيه الذي تقدمه نستله مجاناً تماماُ كالحفل .. وقد سألت إحدى الطالبات ناشطة في الحملة وهي تأخذ منها مجلة "قاطعوا" إن كان النشاط هو ضد زياد سحاب او ضد نستله فأجابتها: النشاط هو من أجل نشر المعلومات عن انتهاكات نستله فيما يتعلق بحقوق العمال وظروف عملهم، وبسيطرتها على تجارة المياه وحرمان السكان الأصليين في الدول التي تشتري فيها حق التصرف يالمياه وبيعها من مورد طبيعي وحق لهم، وبدعمها لإسرائيل واستخدامها لمواد معدلة جينياً ومواداً كيميائية تسبب الإدمان في منتجاتها والشركة عليها دعاو متعددة وتواجه بحملات مقاطعة في الفلبين، بريطانيا، أفريقيا، وأثيوبيا، والدول العربية المتعددة.

وثانياُ النشاط هو من اجل تشجيع الناس على المقاطعة وعلى الإستهلاك الذكي. وثالثاً النشاط من أجل حث شحادين يا بلدنا على ان يتراجعوا عن الغلطة التي ارتكبوها ليظلوا متوازنين مع فنهم الملتزم.

يبقى ان نشير إلى أن نستله افتتحت محال لها في العراق المحتل وتبيع فيه بالإضافة إلى منتجاتها منتجات إسرائيلية.

The activists also distributed the letter posted on Indy media Beirut earlier besides the latest issue of the "Boycott" magazine that is published as collective efforts of the many Arab boycotting campaigns The magazine contains news about boycott activities from all over the world, it also explains about Nestle's support for Israel besides other companies.

Most of the students stopped to take the leaflets and the magazine. Among those were member of the band Ahmad Khateeb while Ziad Sahhab refused to. Many students were involved with the activists and each other in discussions regarding the boycott of such companies and many asked related questions.

Mr. Ziad Moubaied, the Nestle "broker" showed up threatening to make a conflict with the activists as he said. He mentioned that earlier the same day he had to deal with student from the "Democratic Youth Union" inside the university who were distributing a statement against the concert and Nestle. A Hi School activist and member of Indymedia Beirut who was taking a leaflet from one of the activists replied to Mr. Moubaied saying: "you can't threat or stop them from practicing one of their rights that is guaranteed on article 4 of the International Human rights Declaration".

Meanwhile, Assafir daily newspaper reporter Mr. Jihad Bazzi was asking the activists about the letter they were distributing and it was made clear to him that it is in the name of the activist who wrote it and not in the name of the boycott campaign.

On the other side, a discussion was taking place between groups of students. They were discussing the possibility of boycotting the concert after they knew that it is sponsored by Nescafe from Nestle. They also discussed if by refusing to drink the Nescafe that will be offered free just like the concert, this will be considered boycotting as well. Another student asked the activists if the boycott campaign action is against the band it self? She was not able to make up her mind whether to attend or to boycott the concert. An activist from the campaign answered her: "This action is to spread the news about Nestle's violation for human rights especially the workers employed by Nestle. It is to tell how Nestle violates human rights in the countries the company dominate lands and natural resources like water. It is to explain how Nestle supports Israel and its crimes against the Palestinians. It is to show how Nestle supports the apartheid system and practices. It is to show how Nestle uses genetically modified products and to speak about the many boycott campaign against Nestle world wide like in several African countries, Philippines, UK, and in many Arab countries. The action is to promote people as individuals and groups (at universities, etc.) to boycott such a company and to encourage every one starting by the activists themselves to be smart consumers. Finally, this action is to put pressure on the band and to encourage them to reconsider the "mistake" they already conducted by accepting money from Nestle, and to ensure that the band will remain committed as the songs they sing.

Finally, the activists brought a banner with them says that Nestle is selling Israeli products in the occupied Iraq, an information taken from an Israeli website.
